Photo Zine: It’s a Dry Heat

It’s a Dry Heat

October 26, 2022 – Earlier this year, I woke up early on a Sunday morning to catch up on laundry. I dragged everything downstairs only to discover my neighbors left clothes inside of every single machine in the laundry room . Frustrated, I schlepped my laundry to the car and drove to my local laundromat instead.

I had a camera in my purse, and time to kill. So I started taking pictures.

This Sunday morning inconvenience led to a summer-long project of photographing and documenting the experience of doing my laundry at seventeen different laundromats throughout Northeast Oregon and and Southeast Washington. Eventually, I was inspired to turn my growing body of laundromat photography into my first photo zine. And this is the result.

Which laundromats?

Notes on Technique

All photos in this project were shot on a Minolta X-370 camera using Kentmere 400 film. I stand developed my film in Kodak HC-110, and digitized the negatives using an Epson V600 scanner.

The zine was designed in Inkscape and Affinity Publisher, and I hand-bound all physical copies.
